Fair Trade
Chapel Hill has a long history of supporting Fair Trade. Our concern for those living in extreme poverty causes us to not only give generously to meet immediate and urgent needs, but to look for ways to improve quality of life in a well thought out and sustainable manner. Fair Trade is our best hope for doing so.
What is Fair Trade?
Fair Trade is a term referring to a growing social, economic and political movement to ensure that people along every step of the product supply chain receive fair wages, that workers and communities are treated with dignity, and artisans and producers take steps to preserve the environment. By certifying, monitoring and adherring to Fair Trade principles, manufacturers, businesses and consumers work together to promote direct and long-term relationships, transparent business practices, and workplaces free from discrimination and forced child labor. Artisans are compensated with wages that allow them to send their children to school, receive proper healthcare for their family and reinvest in their communities.
